In 1926, when the late Edward A. Stinson and a little band of pioneering associates of his newly organized Aircraft Syndicate proudly rolled their first Stinson-built airplane from a cramped factory loft in Detroit, a notable chapter of aeronautical history was written. For that product, a single engine, four-place bi-plane, was the first the world had ever seen that combined in its design these theretofore uncoordinated features: an enclosed cabin, cabin heater, electric starter, inherent stability and the wheel brake, the latter being Stinson's own invention. The startling innovation provided by that airplane exerted a lasting influence on the struggling industry, and spotlighted its picturesque, aspiring young builder as a man destined to become a leading figure in the world of aircraft design. This booklet details the history of the Stinson airplane.
